why make art?

an interesting question, right? I am trying to figure it out — because I overthink.

but in the attempt of understanding it, I continue to fill memory cards with countless fleeting moments frozen in time.

I wonder how others thought about it in the past — how people generally think about it today.

For many, there's joy in creation - which makes sense through personal experience. I enjoy photography. I have photos from many street photo walks that I love and cherish but are not published anywhere.

I can convert my imagination into something tangible that I can see, touch, and experience — that’s pretty cool in itself.

There's also an undeniable urge to document, to bear witness to the human experience—the laughter, tears, and quiet contemplation. It's the desire to leave behind images that tell stories, evoke emotions, and spark conversations. Art helps document culture. I can act as a witness and show how reality really is! A sort of truth-telling, if your heart is in the right place.

Then there's the magic of storytelling: constructing narratives. We build symbols and integrate them into our world. This is survival—we need stories to believe in ideas that transcend reality, ideas crucial for our species' longevity. We're drawn to images that transport us, challenge our perceptions, and reframe the familiar. The art of storytelling empowers us. It gives me the power to tell stories, to present my version of reality to you. It's still about the real world, but the way I see it.

This amateur thesis suggests there are three key motivations for us to make art.

The joy of creation

Documenting reality and culture

Storytelling through visual narratives

there is one more thought: don't we use art to express ourselves? Purely to represent our inner world, a glimpse of who we are—our character, our mind. In this sense, art serves the purpose of understanding how humans think, an anecdote for justice keepers, neuroscientists, and AI algorithms.
